KestenbaumContemporary fiber art is the theme for a daylong event sponsored by the Surface Design Association (SDA) on October 27 at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, MA. This special event is open to all SDA members and is presented by the national organization and the Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island regional SDA groups. The program includes a presentation by nationally known speaker Stuart Kestenbaum, morning networking and discussion activities, and the opening reception for Context: Language, Media, and Meaning from the Surface Design Association.  Juried by Bruce Hoffman, this exhibit includes 29 works by Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut SDA members who have incorporated written language into their textile inspired artwork. The exhibit runs until February 24, 2019. The Fuller Craft Museum is the only museum devoted to craft in New England and is known for its stimulating, cutting-edge exhibits.

Stuart Kestenbaum, addresses the connection between craft and the written word. Currently the Poet Laureate of Maine, Stuart is the former long-term director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. In addition to his prominence in his field, Stuart is well regarded for his warmth, passion, intelligence and humor as a speaker.

The morning will be devoted to networking activities and small group sessions with facilitated discussions about common interests in textile art and surface design. A networking brown bag lunch is followed by museum tours. The Fuller’s opening reception for the exhibition Context: Language, Media, and Meaning from the Surface Design Associationconcludes the day’s activities. Juror Bruce Hoffman selected 29 works by Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut SDA members who have incorporated written language into their textile inspired artwork.

The event runs from 10:30am-5pm.  Registration opens September 5 and is open to all SDA members. The attendance fee of $40 ($30 for CT, MA and RI members) covers morning networking activities, Fuller Craft Museum admission, tour, Stuart Kestenbaum’s presentation, and Context exhibition reception with refreshments.
