Fiber in the Present Tense

Contemporary Art Textiles by the Massachusetts-Rhode Island chapter of the Surface Design Association

March 3- April 22, 2012 at The Arsenal Center for the Arts

Fiber in the Present Tense will be a juried exhibition that will showcase fiber art from the Massachusetts and Rhode Island members of the Surface Design Association. Scope, materials and subject matter are open and submissions may include surface design, woven, 2D and 3D structures, quilts, stitching, or any other contemporary art textile technique. Maximum submission size is 72”h by 45”w. Work must have been completed in 2009 or after. Artists will receive 60% of the sale price of any work sold.

The Arsenal Center for the Arts occupies 30,000 square feet of space on three floors in a beautifully converted industrial building on the site of a former arsenal in Watertown, MA. It houses two theatres, classrooms and workshop spaces, artist studios, gallery and exhibit space, rehearsal rooms, and informal gathering places. Its stunning and unique architectural design is ideally suited to support its mission of an inter-disciplinary arts center.

Fiber in the Present Tense will be held in the gallery space on the first two floors of the Arsenal Center for the Arts (www.arsenalarts.org). These gallery walls get new audiences with every performance in the theater of New Rep, the resident theater company of the Center. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

JUROR: Alice Zrebiec is the Textile Art curator at the Denver Art Museum and a curatorial consultant based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Zrebiec received her Ph.D. in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. She was the curator of textiles in the department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1979 to 1984. A recipient of numerous professional fellowships and grants, Dr. Zrebiec has published widely, consulted for various museums, and lectured internationally.

Awards: SDA Award of Excellence, recipient to be chosen by the juror.

Fee: Application fee $30 for up to 3 works payable to the Massachusetts-Rhode Island Regional SDA

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

All submissions must include the following:

Application form – to be included on CD and also submitted in a printed version
Artist Biography for publicity purposes of no more than 150 words
3 images in j-peg format, instructions below. One detail image for each piece also accepted. Please note the CD will not be returned.
$30 fee for up to three entries

IMAGE AND CD REQUIREMENTS:

All Images must be in .jpg format, 300 dpi and1500 pixels on the longest side. One detail image for each piece may be included and must be noted as such. No slides or printed photographs will be accepted.
Images must be of completed work intended for the exhibit
All text files must be .doc or .pdf

LOAN AGREEMENT: All artists whose work has been accepted for the exhibition will receive a loan agreement which must be completed and signed before work will be hung. Art will not be hung without a signed loan agreement. Art work will be insured by the Arsenal Center during the course of the exhibition.

SHIPPING and DELIVERY: Accepted work must be delivered to The Arsenal Center on February 26, 12-6pm, unless special arrangements are made in advance. Artists are responsible for delivery and insurance of work in transit to and from the Arsenal Center. Accepted entries may be hand-delivered or shipped by UPS, FedEx or USPS. Shipped work MUST include a pre-paid return shipping label for return of work. We cannot return shipped entries that do not include a pre-paid return shipping label. All items must be gallery ready with all hanging hardware included.

SDA October 2 Regional Meeting

Twenty-some members met at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton for a guided tour of All Things Considered VI: National Basketry Organization Biennial Juried Exhibition. Our own Noelle Foye, the Education Director at the museum led the delightful and informative session of 70 fascinating baskets. After lunch in the museum café a short meeting and show and tell was held in one of the museum classrooms. Our next meeting will be on February 4, 2012 at the Franklin Mill Store.

Mother-daughter team, Ann Lee and Sonja Lee-Austin, will be sharing their separate and joint histories in quilting and fiber art in “Running the Rapids: A Quilt Journey” at the Wayside Quilters Guild Monday night September 12. The guild meets at the Goodnow Library in Sudbury, MA at 7:00 p.m. Visitors are welcome. There is no admission fee.

Linda B. Dunn teaches THE SEDUCTIVE SURFACE this fall at the Arlington Center for the Arts. All levels welcome.

In THE SEDUCTIVE SURFACE you will explore the elements of design while you create your own gorgeous fabrics.

Each week introduces a different technique, from random marks through screens, stencils and thermofax printing. You will make your own tools and build a portfolio of samples you can refer to time and again once the class is done. Along the way we will discuss color, scale, placement and layering, as you search for combinations that make fabrics sing.

No sewing. You provide the fabric. All other materials are included. Class starts October 6 and runs for 8 weeks. Enrollment limited.

Nancy Crasco will be teaching the following classes at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown this fall. Both will be fiber friendly.

DESIGN AND COMPOSITION Knowledge of the elements of design and their function in composition is essential to creating successful works in all genre and media. This course will provide students with the ability to compose and/or improve existing works using basics principles in order to achieve a harmonious and balanced result. Open to all levels. Begins Sat Oct 1 – Nov 26, 10 am – 12 noon

MIXED MEDIA This class will include weekly structured exercises using a variety of media focusing on the elements of design and using them to create a mixed media work on a specific theme. The exploration of a stated theme will generate ideas to encourage creativity through personal expression. This class will not cover basic or traditional techniques- it is best for the student with some experience in art making. (Limit 10) Begins Wed Oct 5 – Nov 30, 9am – 11:30 am

‘some things looming’ in Reading, PA proudly presents, “Felt So Good” an exhibit demonstrating the versatility of felt. This exhibit presents over 30 examples of the medium. Vicki Jensen is one of 15 artisans, from across the country, utilizing felt techniques to express themselves in some surprising and always delightful ways, this show must not be missed. Three of her art pieces in felt are included in this exhibition.

Shibori & indigo dyeing have brought out the best in the other for centuries. We’ll delve into this perfect relationship, starting with easy to learn basics and branching out to advanced techniques, with an emphasis on individual attention and experimentation. Pairing shaped resist techniques, such as binding, pleating, knotting, stitching, clamping and pole wrapping, with indigo means the resulting patterns will be both sharp and subtle, elegant and bold and in such varying shades that blue seems like more than one color. Historical use of indigo will be discussed, but the class will take advantage of modern improvements that make indigo simple to use. No experience is necessary; experienced dyers are welcome.
