Shibori: Discharge and Dye Extravaganza (August 4 – August 7, 2011)
Mo Kelman
We will have four-intensive days to experiment with shibori , traditional and contemporary Japanese shaped-resist techniques. Starting with solid black and dark-colored fabrics, we will make shibori resists with itajime clamping, arashi pole-wrapping, boshi capping, and mokume woodgrain techniques. We will then discharge, or remove the color, resulting in patterned fabric with lightened and dark areas. Next we’ll feed on new layers of color and pattern by applying additional shibori resists and immersing in dye baths. Emphasis will be on designing multiple layers of small and large-scale patterns and color.
