Dear Massachusetts and Rhode Island SDA Members,
It appears that we have had another major problem with the bulk email system that SDA uses. Some of you received today’s email; others have not. So I am posting the whole email here, because it has so much important information that I needed to share with you. I am going to work on another way to send these emails to all of our current members in the future that will assure that you receive them. Thanks for you patience and understanding!
NEW MEETING LOCATION
The Ambassadors and I met recently and discussed our mission with the regional meetings. We all agreed that finding a central location to meet for each of our meetings was needed. I set up a Yahoo poll to see if members were willing to pay $5 to attend a meeting at a location that asked for a donation. Despite an overwhelming response of being very willing to pay, we no longer have to consider that. We found an incredible place to meet for free that is centrally located, so that the majority of our members will only have to drive about an hour to attend. We will now be meeting at Franklin Mill Store in Franklin, MA. For those of you who do not know about the store, you are in for a treat!!! I, for one, just discovered it and could not believe the selection of fabrics, yarns, books, buttons, etc. We are going to be able to use their large upstairs workroom for our meetings, so there will be stairs involved to walk up to the meeting. The only thing that each member will need to do is bring a folding chair. Franklin Mill Store is easy to find, just off of Route 495. Here is the link to their web site, where you can click on their directions link to see the distance and mileage from your home.
OCTOBER MEETING
Our October meeting will not be held in Boston and not on October 24th, as originally planned,. We will meet on Saturday, October 16th from 11:00 to 3:00, at the Franklin Mill Store.
Meeting agenda:
1. Business meeting
2. Program
3. Pot Luck Lunch
4. Show & Tell
BUSINESS MEETING
Our business meeting will focus on our juried member show and the exhibition guidelines. For those of you who are members of the Yahoo group, there is a file that you can open and print that will give you all of the information needed for submitting entries in our show. If you have not joined the Yahoo group I encourage you to, so that you can receive notices from me in between these bulk emails, as well as post about exhibitions that you are part of,
seek members to carpool with you to meetings, etc. Some of you have expressed concerns about navigating around our Yahoo group. If you need assistance, please email Sue Bleiweiss, who will help you with this. You can also download the Exhibition Guidelines from our blog; look for the August 29th post. I had to make an ammendment to the original PDF posted on August 29th, so those of you who printed it need to make one small change. The check for $35 for your submission to our juried show needs to be made payable to: “Massachusetts-Rhode Island Surface Design”.
PROGRAM
Due to the different levels of expertise and needs of our members that attend our meetings, the Ambassadors and I made a decision to format our programs (which will be one hour in length) that would enable members to choose between two options. One would be a lecture/demonstration given by a member, on a specific technique or product; the other would be a group that would enable members to discuss a variety of topics relative to professionalism in our art work,
For our October meeting, I am going to give a lecture and demonstration on using the PROfab Textile Paints. After a review of the differences between transparent, opaque and pearlescent paints, I will demonstrate a variety of fun and easy techniques for designing your own fabrics.
Sue Bleiweiss and Catherine Kirsch will lead the other group that will focus on critiqueing your art work. You can bring one of your pieces and use the format that Jane Dunnewold offers for critiqueing, found at this link. Please print this and bring it with you to our meeting,
POT LUCK LUNCH
Our pot luck at our July meeting was such a huge success that we decided to have one at each of our meetings. So please bring something to share for lunch. We will not have a refrigerator in our meeting room, so if you have a perishable food, please bring it in a cooler with ice packs.
SHOW & TELL
We will start a new format for our Show & Tell at our October meeting. Each person who wants to participate will bring only one new work of fiber art.
The following three questions will be answered during your presentation:
1. What was your source of inspiration?
2. What surface design techniques did you use?
3. What did you learn from this piece that will carry into your next one?
